Hazards
-
Some roads are narrow, remote and exposed,
and you should be prepared for the occasional pot hole,
loose gravel and wandering sheep.
-
All roads are tarmaced -
except -
there is a very short (less than 1km)
section of gravel road at Llandegla.
But it has a good surface (as gravel roads go) and does
not present any difficulty for standard road bikes / wheels / tyres.
There is a route alternative should you wish to avoid it - see
route sheet.
-
The Llangollen Panorama suffers from rock falls and you
may encounter stones on the road.
Stay alert and ride around them.
-
World's End....
After 20km on the outward leg from Chirk to Ruthin
the route crosses the ford at World's End.
The ford is on a bend,
in the middle of a climb and can be very slippery,
Caution is advised,
particularly if you haven't been here before.
It is perfectly rideable but it occurs early in the ride
and could ruin your day if you get it wrong.
I recommend you stop just before the ford,
pick a direct path through,
wait until the road is quiet then proceed slowly,
dead straight, hands off the brakes, ready to put a foot down.
Safely across,
you'll probably wonder what all the fuss was about but,
on the Horseshoe Grimpeur audax in April 09,
three riders dropped it here.
If you have any doubts, you are advised to walk thru it.
